Steps to cook

  1. Prepare the ingredients. Prepare all the ingredients - we will be cooking with them in a moment 👩‍🍳✨

  2. Prepare the starter. Crumble the yeast into a cup of lukewarm water, add a teaspoon of sugar, stir, dust with a tablespoon of plain flour, cover with a tea towel and let the starter rise in a warm place for about 10-15 minutes

  3. Get the flour and baking trays ready. Weigh the flour into a bowl, salt it around the edges, add the softened lard and make a well in the center, and at the same time prepare two baking trays lined with baking paper and a floured work surface with a rolling pin

  4. Mix the dough. Add the risen starter to the bowl with the flour and work into a smooth dough (by hand or in a stand mixer)

  5. Divide into balls. Transfer the dough to a floured work surface and divide it into three equal parts, from which shape balls

  6. Cut into pieces. Flatten each ball and cut it crosswise into four equal pieces

  7. Roll into snakes. Roll each piece into a shorter cylinder ("snake"), with one cylinder making one bread roll

  8. Braid the bread rolls. Braid the rolled cylinders into braided bread rolls

  9. Let rest and preheat the oven. Place the bread rolls on the trays with space between them (about 6 pieces per tray), cover with plastic wrap and let them rest at room temperature for about 15-20 minutes; meanwhile preheat the oven to 220 C

  10. Brush and bake. Brush the bread rolls with beaten egg mixed with a little water, optionally sprinkle with cheese, seeds or bacon, and bake in the preheated oven at 220 C for about 10 minutes until golden

  11. Serve. Serve fresh and enjoy them 🍽️✨
